Knowledge Organisers

aka Summary Pages, Infographics...

Knowledge organisers are designed to help students structure their learning and improve retention. However,  simply skim reading these resources won't lead to genuine understanding. This is where the 'illusion of mastery' comes into play — recognising isn't the same as knowing. To effectively engage with any kind of revision summary, you should practice recall techniques like 'read, cover, write' or getting someone to quiz you.

Activity

Discussion:

  • Does your school or organisation use Knowledge Organisers?

  • Are they effective for all subjects? If not, why not?

  • Are you taught what to do with them?

  • Have you tried 'Read, Cover, Write, Check, Correct?'

  • How could someone else use a Knowledge Organiser to help you revise?

  • Would this person need to know the information too? If not, why not?

  • Do you find it easier for you to revise alone or with others? Why is this?

An Example...

CGP revision guides are highly popular in the UK school revision market. One of the reasons is that they understand how to Dual Code information, as well as providing Knowledge Organisers (revision summaries) to support recall. However, in some cases, the recall needs to be supported (scaffolded) - see below...
