If you're new to the course...

Welcome!

Smart Learning is for everyone - whether you're a student trying to do well in an upcoming test, a tutor guiding a group through a study-skills programme, or an adult learner wanting to use psychology to improve your memory for everyday life. All it takes is a little natural interest in how your brain works and an open mind to take risks and try new things. Scientists call this Metacognition - the process of learning about learning!

Each page is designed around a theme and requires no background knowledge or preparation - just click on the introductory video and take it from there. Discussion points are designed to facilitate group conversations as a teacher or tutor but are also valuable reflection points if you're here alone. Each time, you'll be asked to think about how you currently learn and make one pledge to try something new. That's it!

If you're returning in a new year...

Welcome back! Now let's build on the progress from last year and take things up a level.

Think back to the sessions you've done, the techniques you've attempted and the results you noticed.

Discussion:

  • What do you struggle with most? Knowledge of tasks, strategies or yourself?

  • Which aspects of the Smart Learning programme did you find most helpful last year?

  • Have a look at the topics - what pledges did you make? Did you stick to them? Why?

  • What new content would you like to see as part of the programme this year?

  • Which topics are the most important for before, during and after learning from the list above? Why?

  • Which are the least important for you and why is this?

  • Watch the extension video all about metacognition below
